Historic Mill at Sanssouci Park

The Historic Mill fits picturesquely into the park landscape of Sanssouci. After the original trestle windmill from 1738 had to be demolished due to its poor condition and replaced by a windmill of Dutch design, the facility was destroyed during World War II. Since 1993, the blades of the historic mill have been turning again, visible from afar. Legend has it that Frederick II felt disturbed by the clattering of the mill and asked the miller Grävenitz to tear down his mill. However, when the miller threatened to go to the Chamber Court, the king complied.

The Galerieholländerwindmühle still produces flour today, but is also a museum with a permanent mill exhibition on four levels. In a vivid way, it deals with the artisanal windmill, the history of the Historic Mill as well as the mills of the present. Just how physically demanding flour milling is can be experienced in the permanent exhibition. The mill processes three types of grain: organic rye, organic wheat and organic spelt. The mill has been certified organic since 2011 and is regularly inspected by the food inspectorate. All machines are driven by wind power. The mill can operate from wind force 3 to max. 8. Depending on the wind force and the power requirement, it is possible to change the wind attack area. The canvas on the wings can be partially or completely rolled up.

In a small store on the first floor of the mill, products such as Sanssouci flour can be purchased. In the mill house you can enjoy snacks and drinks, coffee and cake afterwards. The nicest place to sit is under the pergola, which is covered with laburnum and offers a view of the New Chambers.
